MANGALORE: At least 160 people are feared dead after an Air India Express aircraft from Dubai, carrying 173 passengers, overshot the runway while landing at the Mangalore airport on Saturday morning.

At least 6-8 people in critical condition have been rescued. Rescue operation was hampered by the thick smoke that engulfed the plane, airport authorities said.

The aircraft was on fire, he said. About 25 fire tenders and ambulances are on the spot, authorities said.

The incident happened near a valley 10 km from the airport, Karnataka home minister V S Acharya said.

The flight IX-892, operated by a Boeing 737-800, had 163 passengers, 4 infants and 6 crew members on board.

Aviation sources said the aircraft overshot the runway, hit the fence and went beyond the boundary wall of the airport.

All the contact with the aircraft was lost after 6.30 am as the left wing of the plane caught fire.

Aviation sources termed it an 'accident' instead of 'incident', they said. In aviation parlance an accident denotes causalities.

AI has opened helpline centre at Delhi Airport and the two numbers are 011-2565-6196 and 011-2560-3101. Mangalore Helpline number is 0824-2220422

DGCA Director-General S N A Zaidi said, "we have received only preliminary reports regarding the accident. But we are awaiting for the details including the number of passengers."

Civil aviation minister Praful Patel has rushed to the spot.

NEW DELHI – As many as 160 people were feared dead after an Air India plane arriving from Dubai crashed and burst into flames at dawn Saturday as it overshot a hilltop runway in southern India while trying to land in the rain.

Television images showed dense black smoke billowing from the Boeing 737-800 aircraft surrounded by flames just outside the Mangalore city airport in a hilly area with thick grass and trees.

Firefighters sprayed water on the plane as rescue workers struggled to find survivors. One firefighter ran up a hill with an injured child in his arms.

Air India official Jitender Bhargava the plane carried 160 passengers and six crew members. Officials in the state of Karnataka said only six or seven might have survived.

"This is a major calamity," Karnataka Home Minister V.S. Acharya told CNN-IBN TV.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed condolences for the crash and promised compensation for the families of the victims.

As the plane tried to land about 6 a.m. Saturday, it overshot the runway and crashed, Bhargava told The Associated Press.

The crash could be the deadliest in India since the November 1996 midair collision between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane near New Delhi that killed 349 people.

Scores of villagers scrambled over the hilly terrain to reach the wreckage, and began aiding in the rescue operation.

Pre-monsoon rains over the past two days caused low visibility in the area, officials said.

The airport's location, on a plateau surrounded by hills, made it difficult for the firefighters to reach the scene Saturday, officials said. Aviation experts said Bajpe airport's "tabletop" runway, which ends in a valley, makes a bad crash inevitable if a plane overshoots it.

Mangalore airport is about 19 miles (30 kilometers) outside of Mangalore city.

துபாயிலிருந்து மங்களூர் வந்த விமானம் தரையிறங்கிய சமயத்தில், வேகமாக ஓடி ரன்வேயை விட்டு விலகி தீப்பிடித்துக் கொண்டதில் வெடித்துச் சிதறியது. இதில் விமானத்தில் இருந்த 160 பேர் உயிரிழந்தனர். 8 பேர் படுகாயங்களுடன் மீ்ட்கப்பட்டனர்.

இன்று காலை ஆறரை மணியளவில் இந்த கோரச் சம்பவம் நடந்தது.

விமான விபத்து குறித்து ஏர் இந்தியா நிறுவன மும்பை பிராந்திய இயக்குநர் அனுப் ஸ்ரீவத்சவா செய்தியாளர்களிடம் பேசுகையில்,

விபத்துக்குள்ளான அந்த போயிங் 737 விமானம் இன்று அதிகாலை 1.15மணிக்கு துபாயிலிருந்து கிளம்பி மங்களூர் வந்தது.

காலை 6.03 மணியளவில் விமானம் தரையிறங்கியது. அப்போது எதிர்பாராதவிதமாக ரன்வேயில் வேகமாக ஓடிய விமானம், ரன்வேயை விட்டு விலகி ஓடி விபத்துக்குள்ளானது.

இதில் விமானம் வெடித்துச் சிதறியது. விபத்தில் சிக்கியவர்களில் 8 பேர் உயிருடன் மீட்கப்பட்டனர். விமானத்தில் 4 குழந்தைகள் உள்பட 158 பயணிகளும், 6 ஊழியர்களும் இருந்தனர்.

விபத்துக்கான காரணம் குறித்து தற்போது தெரியவில்லை. பல்வேறு தகவல்களை எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம் என்று தெரிவித்தார்.

ரன்வேயில் அது இறங்கியபோது படு வேகமாக விமானம் சென்றதால் அதில் தீப்பிடித்துக் கொண்டது. சில விநாடிகளில் விமானம் வெடித்துச் சிதறியது.

The bodies of those who died in the crash are being taken to Government Wenlock Hospital, Hampankatta, Mangalore. A Help Desk has been set up at the airport, which can be reached at (0091) 0824 2220422 and 0824 2010167. Fire tenders have reached the area which is in terrain that is relatively inaccessible.
