| Bill Gates Bill Gates not only created one of the most revolutionary companies in Microsoft, but has also devoted his life to helping less fortunate people all around the globe. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funds projects centered on developing third-world communities, poor communities in the United States and finding cures for the world's most deadly diseases.
One of Gate’s main focuses is improving the living conditions in third-world countries. The foundation has calculated that almost 2.5 billion people live on a mere $2 a day. By providing people with opportunities to help themselves overcome hunger and poverty, Gates is helping push towards a necessary step in development of these countries. Since food is at the root of both the hunger and economic problems, the foundation has worked with local farmers to raise their productivity levels. Helping farmers increases the accessibility of locally harvested food, in turn building momentum for economy. The foundation has also poured money into other third-world efforts like building libraries, schools and hygienic water supplies and sanitation areas. Some of the 2009 global development grants include The World Food Prize Foundation, Ecobank, Innovations for Poverty Action and BRAC USA.
Gates also invests his energy in providing global health programs around the world. The simplest medical products, which most people in Western civilization can easily purchase at a drug store, are rarities in many parts of the world. More importantly, receiving medical care and remedies to serious illness is non-existent. The foundation works closely with people suffering with the likes of enteric and diarrhea diseases, HIV/AIDS, malaria, pneumonia, tuberculosis and many other life-threatening, yet curable diseases.
To confront these mounting issues, the foundation designed three disciplines: discovery, delivery and policy/advocacy to tackle the concerns. The programs address the lack of medical knowledge, articulating successful approaches and promoting better resources and more effective policies, in order to push towards achieving a better overall health program. Some of the 2009 global health grants include SEEDR, World Health Organization, United Nations Foundation, Medicines for Malaria Venture and many more.
Similar to the nonprofit's stance on global development, is their vision for further development within the United States. Unlike underdeveloped countries, Americans enjoy the privilege of opportunities within reaching distance — sometimes they just need help bridging the gap between themselves and the resources. Gates and the foundation focus on improving education, constructingmore libraries, preventing homelessness, as well as providing post-secondary education and emergency relief to those in need. Some of the 2009 United States development grants include Alliance for Education, Teach for America, ACT and AARP Foundation.
Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Wash. Gates first took an interest in computers when he was 13 years old. After high school, he enrolled in Harvard University in 1974 to hone his skills. However, by 1975 he dropped out to pursue a computer business with future Microsoft partner Paul Allen. Today Gates is worth around $50 billion.
In order to focus on philanthropy, Gates has taken a reduced role in Microsoft. Since 2000, the former chief executive officer of the high-flying computing business, has become a co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the foundation he started with his wife, Melinda, in 1994. The nonprofit gives out thousands of multi-million dollars grants every year, focusing on some twenty-five categories, ranging anywhere from HIV/AIDS to school scholarships.
